Fast 306 PAKISTAN IN FINE FORM

(New Zealand Press Association)

WHANGAREI, December 27.

A dashing 74 by the 17-year-old lefthander, Ghulam Abbas, and a great bowling spell by the spinner, Intikhab Alam, highlighted the first day of the Pakistan cricket team’s opening match against Northland on Saturday.

The tourists were well placed at stumps to force an outright victory when the match continues on Monday. Pakistan scored 306 runs in 225 minutes and declared with nine wickets down. Northland lost nine wickets before stumps but still scored 118 runs in 120 minutes. It was a day of delightful cricket for a big holiday crowd. Abbas was particularly impressive with his flowing offside strokes and his 74 runs came up in 105 minutes. He hit eight fours. Of the other Pakistani batsmen the captain, Javed Burki, appeared most pollished, although Abdul Kadir looked to be set for a good score before he retired. Three Sixes Farooq Hamid lived up to his reputation as a big hit-

ter. Three successive deliveries from the off-spinner. N. Butler, went over the boundary for sixes. The visitors treated their batting in light-hearted fashion to such an extent that Burki batted at number nine. Northland fielded exceptionally well and held some sizzling catches.

The captain, W. Bray, distinguished himself by holding four catches. The spinner, N. Wilson, was the most successful bowler, taking five wickets for 83 runs, but W. Holt appeared to be the only Northlander capable of putting any sort of brake on the ever-rising rate of runs. Burki declared at the afternoon tea break and Northland had two hours to bat.

It started most promisingly when the New Zealand Olympic hockey player, T. Blake, clipped 20 runs off the fast attack in 15 minutes. But he was then run out and the Northland innings fell apart when Intikhab Alam came into the attack. Plenty of Pace

Both Farooq and Asif Iqbal worked up plenty of pace but their bowling did not hold the same terrors for the batsmen as Intikhab’s baffling spinners. Bray, who batted an hour for nine runs, was Intikhab’s first victim, but his dismissal was the start of an avalanche. At one stage the Pakistan spinner had four wickets for 10 runs.

The hard-hitting lefthander, Wilson, hit five fours in making 21 runs and was caught in the deep. B. Presland also struck some mighty blows, including one towering six, but Butler, who top scored with 25 not out, appeared to be the most accomplished batsman for Northland.
