ASHBURTON AHEAD
Buller Has To Follow On (From Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT, Dec. 27. The Ashburton cricket team appears certain to score a clear-cut win in the match against Buller which began at Westport yesterday. The visitors declared their first innings closed at six wickets down for 297. The main contributor was L. C. Blain with a most attractive knock of 122. His tally included 18 fours. The other opener, B. E. Tutty, scored 22 while R. G. Hortin scored 58 not out in a forceful knock. P. Anderson also batted well for 59. The Buller bowling was weak and no player took more than one wicket. The home team scored only 67 in the first innings, with A. J. Wakefield (24) and G. Wood (10) the only players offering any resistance to a formidable attack. K. Connell was in splendid form to take five wickets for 26 and he was well supported by C. Lyght, with two for 26 and T. O’Reilly, three for 11. Following on, Buller had lost three for 22 at stumps.
