TROTTING Trial Run At Gore
"The Press” Special Service INVERCARGILL. December 27. The appearance of Robin Dundee (F. A. Franks) and Tactile (J. Bond) in a run over an easy mile and a half at the Gore Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday aroused keen interest. Tactile made the running, with Robin Dundee getting up in the run in to beat him by half a length. The mile and a half was run in 3min 25sec. the last mile in 2min 15sec, the final half in imin 3 3-ssec and the pair sprinted home from the quarter in 30 2-ssec. Robin Dundee and Tactile, which are furthering their preparation for the Inter-Dominion Championships at Forbury Park in February, will run a much stronger trial at Winton tomorrow. It is expected they will run a mile and a half in 3min 12sec under good conditions. The Southland mile and a half record is held by Lookaway at 3min 12 2-sscc. GRAMEL BEATEN (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, December 27. The trotting idol. Gramel, starting at 7-2 on, was beaten comfortably by the 8-1 chance Sugar ‘n* Spice in the Festival Trotters Free-for-all at the Melbourne Show Grounds last night. Sugar ’n’ Spice (8-1), won by eight yards, with Olympic Torch (25-1) 12 yards away from Gramel in third place. Sugar ’n' Spice ran the distance of about 14 furlongs after a mobile start, in 3min 45 l-ssec. a mile rate of 2min 8 4-ssec, which set a new class and track record, breaking by a second the record established by Gramel in March, 1963. A fortnight ago Sugar ’n’ Spice won the final of the Australasian Trotters’ Championship here, when Gramel finished fourth.
