OCEAN RACE TO AKAROA

Gale First Yacht Light conditions which tested the ability of both yachts and their crews produced some excellent competitive sailing when the South Island’s major ocean race for keelers was held by the Banks Peninsula Cruising Club from Lyttelton Heads to Akaroa yesterday. Although light easterly winds prevailed for most of the distance, the wind freshened when the leading yachts reached Akaroa Heads and there was some close sailing to gain the advantage as the yachts tacked up Akaroa Harbour.

Gale, the first keeler to cross the line, completed the race in about llj hours. The official placings on handicap were not available late last night, but the first six yachts to cross the line were: Gale (L. G. Holder) 1. Gazelle (A. France) 2. Tucana (A. Dickey and C. Buist) 3. Calypso (A. Couling) 4, Waireki (A. Archer) 5, Mana (O. White) 6.
