N.Z. Team Second In Surf Race
(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.)
SYDNEY, Dec. 27. New Zealand surf hopes were raised briefly today with the prospect of a win in the senior surf teams race in an international meeting at Whale Beach, 25 miles north of Sydney. The first three New Zealanders finished third, seventh and eighth, and the visitors seemed set to win the event. However, the fourth New Zealander, C. Blakely, broke the sequence by finishing 25th and New Zealand had to be content with second placing, eight points behind the winner, Newcastle. They were competing
against seven representative teams from different parts of New South Wales. M. Harvey was behind the Australian Olympic placegetter, A. Woods, on coming out of the water and was in the process of beating Woods over the finishing line when he was tripped. Woods was disqualified and Harvey placed third. G. Dann finished seventh and R. Harker eighth. Harker swam a splendid race in the senior belt event but was just pipped for first place. The New Zealand team was well beaten in the six-man rescue and resuscitation event in spite of a good swim by Harvey, who drew the patient’s position and finished a close second behind the Manly competitor, winner of this event.
