Fog, Snow In Britain

LONDON, Dec. 27. Freezing temperatures and snow covered most of Europe yesterday. Britain emerged from the coldest night of the year with two tidal rivers frozen on the Isle of Wight. Roads were made treacherous by fog and ice and eight inches of snow fell in Yorkshire and Scotland. The lowest temperature was 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Europe's coldest community was the Swedish Lapland village of Muodoslompolo in the Arctic Circle, with 20 degrees below zero. Southern Spain enjoyed the continent's warmest weather. at 59 degrees Fahrenheit. The Europe-wide holiday death toll reached 147, mostly tn road accidents. Eighty-two road deaths were recorded in Britain for the three days December 23, 24 and 25. Christmas Day road fatalities dropped sharply to 16 from last year's 34 after an intensive pre-holiday safety campaign. France reported 34 road deaths.
