HOLIDAY TOLL
351 Die On U.S. Roads (N Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) NEW YORK, December 27. Americans died on the roads yesterday at the rate of more than seven an hour. Officials feared the Christmas week-end toll might eclipse 1955’s three-day record figure of 609. The worst ever was the four-day “Black Christmas” of 1956, when 706 died. At 8.30 last night the number killed in traffic accidents this Christmas was 351. A National Safety Council spokesman said: “It is the worst on record right now and the worst hours are ahead of us.” California led the nation with 29 traffic deaths, ahead of Texas (28). Michigan (26) and New York (23). Four hundred and thirtyfour people have so far died in all accidents over the Christmas period, including 40 fire deaths. Nineteen children were among at least 23 people who died on Christmas and Boxing Day in fires throughout the United States.
