NEW YEAR CAMP FOR SEA CADETS

Nine officers, two petty officer instructors, and 103 sea cadets from Christchurch, Dunedin, and Nelson will attend the annual Navy League training camp at Fort Jervois, Ripa Island, from January 2 to 11. Lieutenant Commander M. W. Murnane, commanding officer of the training ship Cornwell at Redcliffs and also at Fort Jervois, will be in charge. Fort Jervois is maintained by the Sumner-Redcliffs subbranch of the Navy League, assisted by the New Zealand Naval Board, as a permanent training base for sea cadets. The Royal New Zealand Navy will supply two cooks and catering, a sick-berth attendant, and transport to and from the camp. Training will include sailing, pulling, shooting, signalling, an assault course, survival course, first aid, and parade drill, all under strict Navy routine. Each day will begin with “rise and shine” at 6 a.m., followed by training from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Then there will be recreation until 5 p.m. There will be films at night, “rounds” at 9 p.m., and lights out and “pipe down” at 10 p.m. The Canterbury R.N.Z.N. V.R. whaler, the T.S. Steadfast whaler, and 16ft skiffs from Steadfast and Cornwell have been taken to Ripa
