The Shoppers’ Bus
Sir,—lt matters far less that the shoppers’ bus proved unsuccessful than that Mr Fardell or somebody had the courage and enterprise to “give it a go.” Sometimes one feels that we could do with rather more of that imaginative spirit in the conduct of our municipal affairs. There will always be people to say “I told you so” when things go wrong. They get a tremendous kick out of it; but unfortunately not in the appropriate place. In this context, one might suggest that, if a ban were imposed on smoking in buses, there would be far less of an outcry than some people appear to imagine. Most of those who habitually smoke in buses probably smoke far too much, anyway.—Yours etc., M.T. December 23, 1964.
