Quiet Christmas For Police, Firemen
Nine persons in Christchurch and district had the misfortune to suffer toothache on Christmas Day. One of the patients of the emergency dentist, Mr E. B. Reilly, was from Darfield. “They were all genuine cases. I had to pull out a few teeth, but I enjoyed Christmas dinner with the family in peace. It is a good service, and not so long ago people
just had to suffer. Yesterday was nothing out of the ordin-ary-just like a Sunday, for the number of patients,” he said. The St. John ambulance service had a considerable number of medical patients to attend to. Christchurch firemen were able to have Christmas dinner without being interrupted. In the morning, New Brighton volunteer firemen and Headquarters stations firemen fought a fairly extensive grass and scrub fire off Marine Parade. It took an hour to make sure the fire was out, and three hoses were used. At 3 p.m. Sockburn and Sydenham firemen were'
called out to a fire in the Haytons road rubbish tip. Christchurch police on duty had a relatively quiet Christmas Day. Nobody was locked up at the Central Police Station. There were some minor road accidents in the city, and four people died suddenly. The temperature at Harewood was above 60deg from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The maximum of 71deg was reached about 1.30 pan. Humidity was rather high. A moderate northeasterly wind made it cooler on the coast than inland. The beaches were- not crowded, and there were no reports of any swimmer getting into difi Acuities.
