SPRINTER RESTING
Heeps Not Retired "The Press" Special Service WELLINGTON, Dec. 23. Wellington’s top track sprinter and three times New Zealand champion. R. Heeps, is unlikely to race this summer. He said this yesterday when discussing his plans for the future. Heeps normally makes his debut for the season at the annual New Year’s Day meeting at Paraparaumu, but pressure of business has kept him from training and he is not likely to appear at any subsequent meetings either. This does not mean that we may have seen the last of the man who should have been officially recognised as one of New Zealand’s three fastest-ever sprinters. An administrative bungle prevented his national record equalling 9.6 sec for the 100yds from being recognised. Heeps said yesterday: “Retirement? No fear. I haven’t retired, that’s for sure.”
