India Wins Series In Ceylon

(N.Z.P.A.- Reuter— Copyright) HYDERABAD, December 23, India made certain of winning the unofficial three-match test cricket series against Ceylon when it took the second test yesterday by seven wickets, for a 2-0 lead.

Final scores: India 505/6 dec. and 154/3. Ceylon 289 and 378.

India won the first test in Bangalore earlier this month, by an innings and 46 runs. In spite of Ceylon’s fourthwicket stand of 224 between the skipper, M. Tissera and S. Jayasinghe, the Leicestershire batsman, India won with 35

minutes to spare. Both batsmen made centuries.

Tissera and Jayasinghe, who came together yesterday, were in complete mastery until almost lunch and Ceylon looked set for a draw. But with the total at 294 for three, Rusi Surti broke the fighting partnership by getting Jayasinghe caught at first slip by the Nawab of Pataudi.

Jayasinghe hit 21 fours in his 135, made in four hours. Tissera went soon afterwards. He also made 21 boundaries in scoring 122 in 4hr lOmin. India was left to make 154 in 140 minutes and raced to

victory, thanks to an exhilirating display of hitting by the wicket-keeper, F. M. Engineer.

Engineer reached 100 in 100 minutes to register his maiden test century and the fastest test hundred by an Indian batsman. He hit 10 fours and when the match ended he was 102 not out.
