DECEMBER 24 MASONIC BALL AT KAIAPOI.—This ball came off with great eclat at the Kaikanui Music Hall, on Thursday night The room was tastefully decorated with wreaths of evergreens, and flowers, and the arrangements reflected great credit on the stewards to whom these matters had been entrusted. The guests began to pour in at about 8 p.m., the dancing commencing shortly after, and was kept up till past four on the following morning. At 11 p.m. a capital supper was partaken of, which was supplied by Mr Grant, and a great variety of toasts were given and responded to. The band from the Princess’ Theatre was in attendance, and performed their part to the satisfaction ofall present GAZETTE.—In a Provincial Government Gazette of the 21st of December, the boundaries of the educational district of Governor’s Bay is defined as follows:—Commencing at a point on the southern side of Church Bay, where the stream running through section 1619

enters the sea; following up that stream to its intersection by the road leading past Castle Rock, thence by a right line to Mount Herbert, following westerly along the ridge of hills by McQueen’s Pass and Gibbies Pass, to the ridge by Cooper’s Knob and Cass’s Peak; following northerly and north-easterly along that ridge to the Dyer’s Pass Road; following southerly along that road and the creek running through section 226 to the sea, and from thence returning along the sea beach to the starting point.

GAS.—The first instance of the use of gas in any of the houses in Christchurch was we believe to be found in Coker’s Hotel, on Thursday night, the branches and some of the minor fittings having been laid on to his premises. To-night, however, we hear that several houses will display the new acquisition—Ruddenklau’s Hotel amongst the number. The Gas Company have, we see, been busy in affixing some handsome stars, &c., on the Town Hall and other buildings, to be lit up at dark to-night
