GRANTING LICENCES

Mares For Breeding

(N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, December 22. Consideration is being given to the issuing of import licences for the importation of thoroughbred mares for breeding purposes, the Minister of Customs (Mr Shelton) announced today.

“The thoroughbred breeding industry is a valuable earner of overseas exchange by virtue of its exports,” he said.

After representations by the industry, it had been decided to allow the importation of a limited number of mares to improve and increase the range of blood lines, he said.

Mr Shelton said applications for licences from established stud properties would be considered by the Customs Department.

He said the department would “have due regard” to the extent to which progeny from the particular studs had been offer ed for sale at the national yearling sales, and the overseas buying interests shown in past drafts.
