Water-Heater s
Sir, —I can tell your correspondent, “J.L.8.,” exactly why her water-heater is still being rendered almost useless by being cut off for many hours each day by ripple control. It is because we are not allowed by law to install up-to-date, efficient, scientific-ally-proved water-heaters in our houses. The only type of domestic electric water-heater sanctioned under Standard Specification No. 720 for manufacture, sale, and installation in our homes is wastefully inefficient and unsafe.
It wastes so much electricity that the retailers of electric power make enormous profits by selling a great deal more electricity than we really require. This not only hits our pockets, but also consumes so much available power that ripple-control—-costly to the householder — has been introduced in a frenzied and misdirected effort to save power.—Yours, etc.,
J. ANDERSON. October 16, 1964.
[The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, which is understood to be re-testing the the water-heater referred to by Mr Anderson, has not replied to our invitations to comment on the above letter. —Ed., “The Press.”]
