Price Of Lettuces
Sir, —As a commercial grower, I recently received 6d a dozen for lettuce, freshly cut and auctioned ’ within three hours, only to find later in the day that the retailers were selling them for not less than Is and up to Is 6d each, while the previous week’s produce, newly trimmed, was selling for 6d each. I feel that the public would be more willing buyers if produce was sold at a realistic price, and with the resultant higher sales, turnover would increase and sales at the produce markets would be more stable. No grower wants to see periods of high prices with customer resistance, then violent fluctuations. Let us be fair—6d for the grower, 6d for the retailer, and plenty for everybody.—Yours, etc., LETUS BEFAIR. November 22, 1964.
