PANJIM (Goa), Dec. 22
One person was killed and another injured on Sunday night when Indian police fired on rioting strikers at Vasco da Gama, 25 miles from Panjim, officials said. The police fired when winchmen, who have been on strike for more than a month, threw stones and damaged cars and buses, the officials said.
The first reports said 16 policemen were injured by flying stones. About 50 arrests were made. About 800 winchmen are on strike for higher wages.
