LANDING BY MARSDEN

Re-enactment In Church

A group of 24 Maoris and Europeans on the chancel steps of Holy Trinity Church, Avonside, on Sunday evening, re-enacted the landing of Samuel Marsden made in the Bay of Islands, 150 years ago on Christmas day. The Maori party wore native costume and the Europeans were dressed in period costume.

The Maori group awaited Marsden’s arrival on the chancel steps. Marsden, with his party, moved the length of the church. A pulpit was erected on the steps and from it Marsden proclaimed the text: “Fear not for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy . . .”

To a question put first in Maori and then in English as to what was happening, Marsden replied they would hear all of it in time.

The re-enactment was preceded by the singing of carols by the Holy Trinity Choir and the reading of lessons by members of the congregation which numbered about 200. After the re-enactment the players joined in the singing of the processional hymn “Come All Ye Faithful.”
