IMPORT BAN

Some Forms Of Chemical

(NZ. Press Association; WELLINGTON, Dec. 21. The import of certain forms of B.H.C. (benzene hexachloride) and D.D.T. (dichloro - diphenyl - trichloroethane) had been prohibited by a Customs Import Prohibition (Insecticides) Order, the

Minister of Customs (Mr Shelton) said today. Mr Shelton said the purpose of the order was to ensure that these forms of the chemicals, which had had negligible insecticide properties but which left residues in farm produce, were not imported. It was most essential that both New Zealand’s overseas and local markets should continue to enjoy the highest quality produce free from contamination. After consultation with the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Taiboys) he had agreed to permit the import of the chemicals provided they were of a satisfactory standard of purity and were accompanied by an analyst’s certificate to the effect that the consignment met with the specified requirements. Approval for imports of a lower quality would be considered for scientific or experimental purposes, he said.
