LUSH GRASS ON PITCH
“Never Better” At Eden Park
(N.Z. Press Association)
AUCKLAND, Dec. 21. The pitch at Eden Park for the Auckland v. Pakistan cricket game, which begins on December 31, “has never been better,” said the chief groundsman, Mr R. Beveridge, today. It carries a lush sole of grass which, according to Mr Beveridge, is the result of a system of fertiliser application over the last three years. “No-one can help just how a pitch will play,” he said, “but we’ve certainly overcome the problem of bald pitches which were responsible for a lot of slow batting in the past. “On those bald pitches the ball used to be cut to ribbons after about an hour’s play. “But last season teams were getting 200 runs and still having shine on the ball, and this season it will be even better.” The Pakistan team arrives in Auckland at 7.15 p.m. tomorrow night after its short “warm-up” tour of Australia.
