LOCAL BODY RECEIPTS

Increase Last Year

Receipts during 1963-64 from rates and levies by counties, cities and boroughs, town districts and road districts amounted to £3O million (£26.3 million for 1962-63). From public utilities, licences, rents, and interest the receipts were £34.7 million (£24.7 million in 1962-63), says the Abstract of Statistics.

Other receipts (including grants and subsidies from the Government, and loan moneys) brought the total 1963-64 receipts to £102.0 million, compared with £82.5 million for the previous financial year. For the year ended March 31, 1964, payments were £98.4 million, an increase of £16.0 million over the 1962-63 total of £82.4 million. A large proportion of this increase was a result of increased expenditure on construction and maintenance (£65.7 million for 1962-63 to £74.5 million in 1963-64), and an increase in loan repayments from £4.4 million in 1962-63 to £B.O million for 1963-64.

Receipts for the year ended March 31 exceeded payments by £3,514,000, compared with a similar credit excess of £56,000 for the previous year.
