“GREAT CHOIR”

Auckland Cathedral

(N.Z. Press Association)

AUCKLAND, Dec. 20. The choir of St. Mary’s Cathedral, Auckland, has been ranked among the great Anglican choirs of the world in a review of the December issue of the British magazine, “Records and Recording.” The magazine lists the choir's recording, “Music For the Church’s Year,” as one of the 10 records from all sources in its “pick of the month.”

The reviewer, Kenneth Long, has chosen the Auckland record as one of his “top 10” discs for 1964. He describes the choir’s singing as of “incredibly high standard —far higher, in fact, than obtains in most English cathedrals.”

Mr Long says the choir was obviously inspired and disciplined by its choirmaster. Mr Peter Godfrey. The singing represented many months of extremely hard work, but the choir could now claim a place among the great Anglican choirs of the world. Complimentary reviews of the recording also appeared in the “Church Times” and the “Gramophone.” Both reviews ranked the choir among the best.
