Newspaper Director To Retire This Month

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

STONEY, Dec. 20.

Mr Rubert Henderson will retire as managing director of John Fairfax Limited—owners and publishers of the “Sydney Morning Herald” — on December 31, it was announced on Friday.

He will be succeeded as managing director by Mr A. H. McLachlan, the present general manager. Mr Henderson has been a trustee of Reuters since 1952, when he succeeded the late Sir Keith Murdoch. He has

been a member of the board of Australian Associated Press, a partner of Reuters, since 1938, and is at present a joint managing director of A.A.P. Mr Henderson was the first Australian Associated Press—New Zealand Press Association director to be appointed to the Reuter board (in 1947) when the A.A.P.Reuter partnership was made. Mr Warwick Fairfax, chairman of John Fairfax Limited, who made the announcement, said the board had agreed to Mr Henderson’s retirement with great regret. “I believe he is entitled to be regarded as the outstanding newspaper man of his generation,” Mr Fairfax said.
