RACING Meandering-Tuborg For Greymouth Double

Meandering and Tuborg could be one of the most popular combinations for the TA.B. double at Omoto today. This double on the first day of the Greymouth Jockey Club’s summer meeting will operate on the Hannan Memorial Handicap and the Brunner Hack Handicap.

Meandering will be the only runner in the Hannan Memorial trying to keep a winning record intact.

He beat the ’ open milers convincingly on a heavy track at Hokitika last Monday. He might not have similar footing today, but the track is almost certain to be easy and Meandering will be going a mile and a quarter which is probably his best distance. Five-year-old Shanty Town, the youngest in the field, might be the strongest of Meandering’s rivals. This Nel-son-trained Khorassan gelding has not raced since the Wellington meeting last month. He was not placed at Trentham but ran well for a seventh and fifth in strong hack fields. Not long beforehand Shanty Town had won a double in hack class at Westport.

The prospect of better footing will brighten the chance of Silver Kingdom. Although he finished third among the milers at Hokitika on Monday he was under pressure on the heavy ground a fair way from home. Silver Kingdom is one of three six-year-olds still left in the field. Gold Find has been scratched. The others are Crackers, the runner-up in each of his two races at Hokitika, and Marlow, which will be a light-weight chance on a left-handed track. He could not handle the turns When

going the other way around at Hokitika. Julloch, R. J. Skelton’s mount, and Ashleigh, a stablemate of Tuborg, are two newcomers to the circuit which could have solid backing. Tuborg, the Otaio Plate winner at Riccarton the last time she raced, is generally expected to master 9-1 successfully against the hack stayers in the Brunner Handicap. The hardest for Tuborg to beat could be Waitohi and

Beach Gold, which both have last start wins on their records over the distance, a mile and a quarter. There will be a double for course patrons only on the Novice Stakes No. 1 and the Blackball Hack Handicap. Idle Chatter and Corneil might be the successful combination. There was heavy rain for about three hours in Greymouith yesterday morning, but it was fine with good drying during the afternoon. Nevertheless, the forecast for today is for further showers, and if that proves correct the track could be soft or even heavy. Fields are:—
