TROTTING Chance For La Garrison In Stakes At Orari

La Garrison, a desperately unlucky fifth in the New Zealand Derby Stakes last Saturday, will have a chance to make amends in the Orari Challenge Stakes at the Geraldine Trotting Club’s annual meeting today. While it could not be suggested that La Garrison should have beaten the Derby winner, Doctor Barry, he had to contend with' more interference than the majority in the race and would have required only a little in his favour to have returned a dividend.

La Garrison has none of the horses to finish in front of him in the Derby among his rivals today, but he will have to enjoy a lucky run early from 12 yards to work into a handy position. If he does receive a reasonable run, he should be too good for most of his opponents and he could gain a welldeserved win.

Compromise and Golden Sunset could be the pick of the 16 horses on the limit. Compromise finished fourth in the race won by Donald Dundee on the second day of the cup meeting and has not raced since.

The Garrison Hanover filly has drawn badly, but if she has made the improvement expected in the last fortnight, she could overcome this disadvantage without too much difficulty. Golden Sunset was most impressive when he finished boldly from an awkward position for second to Cloudy Bay at the cup meeting. The Light Brigade colt is one of the most promising young pacers in commission and he has shown marked improvement with every race. Blue Pin, Queensway and Sonny Jim are three smart pacers on the limit, and another capable trio on 12 yards are Mister Chips. Syncom and Russell Gee, any of which could be prominent. The double will be run on the Geraldine Cup and the President’s Handicap. Mitcham and Heriot forming a likely favourite combination. Fine weather is forecast and the track will be fast.
