90 Years Of Achievement
On Monday, Sir Winston Churchill will be 90. Even his sternest foes will have to strive to keep a catch from their voices as they cheer the old warrior for entering the tenth decade of an amazingly crowded and accomplished life. The world-wide avalanche of greetings, unequalled for any commoner in this century, has been flowing into his home near London’s Hyde Park gate for several days. Britain herself is straining every sinew to make his birthday memorable. The variety of tributes will almost equal the versatility of Sir Winston Churchill himself. For months television companies have been re-
searching, shooting and editing special commemorative programmes.
New editions of his books are rolling off the presses, and a record company has gathered together a 12-disc album of tapes that Sir Winston Churchill recorded of his war-time speeches.
Newspapers are preparing exhaustively detailed commemorative issues on November 30.
They will have little new to tell but the public never tires of reading with fascination, admiration and awe of Sir Winston Churchill’s multifarious exploits. His life now spans three generations but his career is stuffed with enough vigour and accomplishment to fill a dozen lifetimes.
Sir Winston Churchill has been acclaimed as the most notable man of the century and the most respected human being on this planet.
He has been a soldier, war correspondent, member of Parliament, Home Secretary, a famous Lord of the Admiralty, wartime Prime Minister, historian, biographer, novelist, Nobel Prize winner, painter, bricklayer, bizarre fashion leader—and the greatest advertisement the cigar industry has ever had. He takes up two and a half columns in “Who’s Who,” the longest and most glittering entry. The editor of the Encyclopedia Britannica needed more than four pages and 6000 words to offer a tight precis of his words and deeds.
