Advertising
Sir, —When attacked, the advertising agents and their associates apparently decide to play possum and remain discreetly silent. Meantime they continue to sow the economic and socially irresponsible wind from which we will all reap the whirlwind. They divert millions of pounds worth of manpower into the wasteful activities typical of much present-day commercial advertising, etc. Doubtless this will continue as long as people are too indifferent to ask what the racket costs and who pays. It will also continue as long as sales-promotion of any type or amount is regarded as a justifiable business expense prior to taxes being assessed. Repeatedly we are told that to maintain our standard of living we must increase production. As an alternative, why not cut out some of this profligate and irresponsible spending? Still better, let us do both: increase production and curtail waste.—Yours, etc., E. R. HUDSON. November 27, 1964.
