MOSAIC IN CHAPEL

This 31ft 3in by 15ft mosaic mural of the Crucifixion, made in Christchurch, has been installed in the Redemptorist Monastery in New Brighton behind the main altar. The mosaic, made up of 350,000 tiny coloured tiles, depicts the Grace of Redemp-

: tion descending from the > Symbols of Creation through - the crucified Saviour to t Christ’s flock on earth. i The mosaic represents a major advance in the art for f New Zealand. A few years , ago It would have had to - come from overseas. It was

made by the studio of Robert J. Hampton. First it was drawn in miniature, then in full scale and later transcribed on to sections of asbestos. Most of the tiles, which had to be cut into the 350,000 pieces, were manufactured in the' Christchurch studio, but some were imported from Italy and Japan. The studio’s chief designer and artist, Mr L. Fone, who learned his craft in Britain before coming to New Zealand about 10 years ago, was in charge of the work. Completion of the mosaic took about 14 months.
