VILLAGERS IN INDIA
Lot To Give The World
“The village people of India need our help, sympathy, co-operation and understanding,” said Miss M. I.
Mullan, the principal of St. Margaret’s College, in a talk to a sixth formers’ Asian Studies seminar in the Civic Theatre. Miss Mullan, who spent 16 years in India, told the students that Indian villagers had a lot to contribute to the world, in terms of their outlook. patience, humour, and dignity. “When the time comes for these village people to take their place in the world, they will have very much to show us, who think ourselves in many ways so superior,” she said.
In reply to a question, Miss Mullan said her guess was that the Communists would not be able to take over in India. She said the village people were not easily taken in. not easily bulldozed, and they had their own way of doing things and getting things done. Questioned on the likelihood of China over-running India, Miss Mullan said India had to be regarded as a bulwark of democracy. If she was threatened by China, the other democratic nations would have to be expected to come to her aid.
