Japanese May Complain
(New Zealand Press Association)
NEW PLYMOUTH, Nov. 19. A New Plymouth fisherman, Mr E. Parker, and his crew had a close encounter with the Japanese fisheries patrol boat Tokomaru on Wednesday when their trawler, the Geneva May, inadvertently swept across set-lines from Japanese fishing vessels about 10 miles out from Tirau Point, near Awakino. Mr Parker said today that only minutes after his trawler fouled the lines, the patrol boat raced to the scene and
circled the trawler at a distance of about 50 yards. “They made no communication with us, but It was quite obvious that they wanted us out of the way,” said Mr Parker. He said that during the last week he had seen as many as four Japanese vessels fishing off the Taranaki coast, usually about 10 miles from land. One night he saw a Japanese vessel fairly close in, but could not judge whether it was inside the three-mile limit because of the dark.
