Mayoress Of Lower Hutt Dies In Hospital

WELLINGTON, Nov. 19. Mrs Mary Dowse, Mayoress of Lower Hutt, died in the Hutt Hospital early this morn-
I ing from injuries suffered when she was struck by a car lin Lower Hutt last Thursday. Mrs Dowse, who was 64, did not regain consciousness after the accident Mr and Mrs Dowse were born in Lancashire. They emigrated to New Zealand in 1922, and lived briefly in Auckland before* going to Lower Hutt. Mrs Dowse took a particular interest in drama and other cultural activities in addition to her duties as Mayoress. As a member of the Wellington Hospital Board she showed her fighting qualities in advocating the hospital for Lower Hutt. . She was also an enthusiastic’ worker for women’s organisations, especially the Plunket Society. She was for five years president of the Hutt Valley branch of the National Council of Women and, at the time of her death was patroness of the Save the Children Committee. Mrs Dowse is survived by her- husband, a son, and a daughter.
