DANGER TO N.Z.

Naval Reserve Warned "The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, Nov. 18. There was too much of an “I’m all right Jack” attitude to defence among New Zealanders, said the Chief of the Naval Staff, (Rear-Admiral R. E. Washbourn) addressing reservists at the Auckland Naval Reserve headquarters, H.M.N.Z.S. Ngapona. He said New Zealand had recently been called a “white blob in an Asian ocean.” New Zealanders in general did not appreciate the danger of the international situation. “Reservists are part of the minority who realise that we must defend ourselves,” he said. The Navy was trying to establish closer ties with the United States Navy through exercises in the Pacific. “This is not to say we are moving further away from the Royal Navy,” the admiral said, “but when the balloon goes up we will all be in it together and our relations with both countries will need to be as strong as possible.”
