SATELLITE TRACKING
Regular Watch Next Year Regular tracking of satellites, a practice which was not done in New Zealand at present, would be started by the Canterbury Astronomical Society early next year, said the secretary of the society (Mr S. F. Phipps). When the new Joyce Observatory at West Melton was completed one of its main objects would be the observing and tracking of artificial satellites. This was one of the conditions of the Joyce bequest, for the provision of the society’s own observatory. Plans for the observatory would definitely go ahead, said Mr Phipps. A firm of consulting engineers was handling the letting of tenders for the building and the dome. Mr Phipps said that a meeting of the society was held this week to discuss the question of satellite tracking. There seemed to be sufficient support, he said, with six or seven members taking part under the leadership of Mr N. E. Heath. A great deal would depend on the nature of the calculations required, said Mr Phipps. These could prove to be too much for amateurs. However, it was hoped that American asistance would be obtained and simplified tables provided.
