Library Service
Sir,—From the City Council news in “The Press” about Public Library service, I see that Councillor Smith says that you don’t need a B.A. to hand “Peyton Place” over the counter. Quite true, you don’t; but you do need one to make a decision as to whether to buy. You don’t only need graduates with B.A.’s but you need qualified staff with B.Sc.’s, B.E.’s, Mus.B.’s, etc., to make readily available all the technical material that a growing community requires and is entitled to. If Councillor Smith’s knowledge of his own Canterbury Public Library is confined to the “Peyton Place” type of literature, perhaps it would be a good idea for him to work with his qualified staff for a few days so that he might appreciate what is involved in providing a worthy public library service.—Yours, etc., EX-LIBRARIAN (DUNEDIN) November 19, 1964.
