Butter Consumption
Sir, —Is not the real question a political one? Several years ago a commission was set up to find out dairy farmers’ costs. They reported that cost of production at that date was 38d, but the Government continued to pay out 32d. Costs have risen since then and the Government has been approached about increased prices. It in turn told the , farmers that their pay-out had to be governed by what they received on the overseas market. Now the overseas price is higher than the New Zealand payout, so the Government is faced with increasing the price of butter or subsidising it. After giving themselves, hairdressers, doctors, bakers, etc., a good share of the national income, they a’re evidently afraid to be honest with the farmer. Why cannot the Government use this kind of control over all other com-
modifies, thereby controlling the cost of living?—Yours, etc. SOLIDS-NOT-FAT. November 19, 1964.
