ROLE OF LAITY IN CHURCHES
N.C.C. To Set Up Committee
A decision to set up a committee on the laity was made by the National Executive of the New Zealand National Council ~of Churches. The committee will be a centre of information and study on the role of the laity in the whole life and mission of the Church and will seek to stimulate lay activity. The general secretary of the council (the Rev. D. M. Taylor) said that there had been a world-wide reassessment of the work of the laity in the church, but in New Zealand there had not been any ecumenical body to bring together the insights gained in the separate churches.
“The revival of the laity,” he said, “received tremendous stimulus in Germany under Hitler and the movement has gone from strength to strength since then.” With pastors in prison during Hitler’s rule, the laity became very active.
