Society For Singing The Praises Of Mother

The Morinaga’s Society for Singing the Praises of Mother is the unusual name of an organisation in Japan which has letterheads with the following verse:— •‘People of the world:

“Let us sing the praises of mothers; “Let us show our gratitude to mothers; “Let us think of dear

Recently the society held its fifth exhibition in the “My Mother” international children’s drawing contest. Two pupils of the Quinns Road Primary School, Christchurch, David Hill and Peter Elliott, have received diplomas and medals for their entries.

It is understood that 11 awards came to New Zealand. The outright winners of the contest, a German boy aged 10 and an American girl aged 12, were invited to attend the Olympic Games in Tokyo. There was a total entry of 5435 drawings from 28 countries.

The Quinns Road School knows nothing of the sponsoring society. Its entries were submitted in response to an advertisement by the New Zealand Education Department, which had been informed that the competition was supported by the Japanese Ministry of Education.
