Use Of Fiscal Measures
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 18.
If inflation was to be countered successfully there must be public acceptance of the need to use fiscal policy and budgets as major instruments of economic policy, the Secretary to the Treasury (Mr E. L. Greensmith) said tonight
“In some years this would require, among other measures, support for increased rates of taxation to restrain demand.
“On other occasions tax reductions may be desirable, in other words, if we are to avoid inflation, we must be prepared to accept upward as well as downward adjustment of tax rates,” he said.
