3:50 Mile—Snell Is Doubtful
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, Nov. 18. In the light of his grim run on Tuesday night,- and also of other record runs, P. G. Snell says that he is doubtful if he will ever run a mile in 3min 50sec or better.
He said today that he still believed his potential to be possibly as fast as 3min 48sec, but that such a time depended on an ideal combination of factors such as was unlikely to be ever gained. “There are so many factors,” he said, “it’s impos-
sible to make a proper assessment. “I realise now that the 3min 48sec mile would require everything in your favour everything. You would have to devote a whole training programme of half a year for one particular race. “And in that race you would need perfect conditions of track, crowd and race. The pace would have to be dead right and someone would have to drag you through to the last lap and be still challenging. “It’s potentially possible but I can’t see myself achieving it.”
