ASHBURTON RED CROSS
Celebration Of 25th Year The Ashburton sub-centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society held its 25th anniversary yesterday. Nearly 70 members of the subcentre attended the celebratory meeting.
Mrs I. Hamilton, the subcentre president, welcomed al! present and especially Mrs M. Curtis, the first vicepresident, and Mrs J. Bennett, the second secretary. The minutes of the first meeting had been lost but Mrs Hamilton read the first annual report from the meeting in 1940. The report described the formation of the sub-centre and gave an account of the first meeting held on June 12, 1939. She then gave an account of activities during the Second World War and the services rendered to troops in New Zealand and overseas. The post-war years had been quieter, but provided plenty of work for members.
Mrs Curtis and Mrs Bennett both spoke to the meeting. They both praised the work of. the late Dr. G. I. Miller in founding the subcentre and paid tribute to the members during the war years who contributed so much.
Sprays were presented to Mesdames M. Curtis (first vice-president and second president), J. Bennett (second secretary), J. Connor (Patroness of the sub-centre and the Mid-Canterbury centre), J. Davidson (Mayoress of Ashburton), and I. Hamilton.
An apology was received from Mrs G. I. Miller who was Mayoress in 1939 and the wife of the founder.
