VERTICAL LIFT
U.S. Plane Tested (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Nov. 18. The army announced yesterday it had successfully flight-tested an experimental plane which could make a vertical take-off from an area as small as a tennis court. The plane, the XVSA liftfan jet, took off like a helicopter during the test and streaked away at high speed in conventional horizontal flight. The army said that such a plane could perform missions at high speeds, return, hover, and land vertically in jungle clearings and other remote, rugged areas.
