The Traffic Plan
Sir, —Driving through the green beauty of Hagley Park via Bealey avenue and the Carlton to Riccarton, one would indeed be a person of undiscerning eye who was not apprecative. On the return via the Hospital corner the vista is little less pleasing One can only conjecture the reason for the haste of your correspondent “Observer.” The few seconds involved in driving round the park do not warrant its mutilation, which can only result in shifting the minor traffic snarl elsewhere. The financial implications of this part of the ridiculous plan is similar to the contemolated demolition of homes in St. Albans-Shirley with hardship to the owners. Another bridge over the Waimakariri is necessary and a feeder to Johns road or thereabouts. Ruth France, M. W. Simes and C. C. Steel reflect the views of thousands who signed the petition. The Christchurch City Council and th> planners would do well to consider the views of the majority.—Yours, etc. HUMANITY BEFORE HASTE. November 18, 1964.
