LONG RUN
Airmen Start Tomorrow
Twenty-one servicemen, mainly aircrew, will leave the Royal New Zealand Air Force station, Wigram, at noon on Friday for a 210-mile run to the R.N.Z.A.F. station at Woodbourne. The team plans to arrive at Woodbourne at 9 a.m. on Saturday after running through the night.
“All the runners are volunteers. They are not necessarily men with a bent for athletics,” said the physical training officer at Wigram, Flight Lieutenant J. S. Horne.
About six weeks ago a team from Woodbourne ran to Wigram in 18 hours 50 minutes. Wigram will attempt to do better.
At stake is the R. C. Murie Trophy, given by the father of a boy entrant at the Boy Entrant School at Woodbourne. The athletic clubs of both Woodbourne and Wigram compete annually for the cup.
One of the “hard core” of the Wigram runners will be D. Puckett, the Canterbury marathon runner and brother of the Olympic runner, R. L. Puckett. Two physical education instructors will also run.
