BATSMEN IN FORM

Confident 53 By Dowling

Batsmen In both teams showed good form on an easy-paced pitch at W’oodend yesterday when a Canterbury XI met a North Canterbury XI in a oneday match. N. Q. and G. T. Wright figured in a good partnership of 81 runs for North Canterbury’s second wicket. G. Wright played some beautiful forcing shots off the front foot and appeared in complete command of the Canterbury attack before running himself out. B. A. Bolton and G, T. DowUng opened brightly for the Canterbury XI, Bolton in particular scoring freely all round the wicket. Dowling displayed a welcome return to form and at the end of his innings was stroking the ball with all his old assurance. R. M. Gearry and A. G. Dupkmanton also played some handsome strokes in compiling useful scores. Scores:—North Canterbury 156/6 declared (N. Wright S 3, G. Wright 51: B. Andrews 2/17. P. A. Thomas 2/37). Canterbury 214/8 (Dowling 53, Bolton 56, Gearry 28, Duckmanton 32; T. Thomson 2/47). Sutcliffe’s Ambition

(N.Z. Press Association) HAMILTON, November 8.

The former New Zealand lefthand batsman, B. Sutcliffe, has no illusions about the magnitude of his task to win back a place in the side for next year’s tour of Pakistan, India and England. He thinks nis chance of selection lies as a middle order batsman following J. R. Reid, who would normally be expected to bat at No. 4, but it is possible that Sutcliffe will win back a position as opener, of which three are likely to be taken on tour.

To return to the international scene after several years absence will require a lot of hard work and he knows it.

He will have to be perfectly fit and he will have to score plenty of runs this season. He has been doing steady road work for the last fortnlghl and is happy with his condition.
