Cashmere Beaten By United

The changes likely to be made in the Christchurch senior women’s tennis competition were obvious from the first round on Saturday when Cashmere, winner of the competition for the last six seasons, was beaten immediately. Weakened by the departure of Miss J. Davidson and Mrs E. Campbell, Cashmere was beaten by United, 5 matches to 1. In the other fixture, Avonside, led by the five-times national champion, Mrs R. Davy, beat Shirley by a similar score. The points are:—Avonside 15, United 15, Shirley 1, Cashmere 1.

Mrs Davy produced some of the swinging drives for which she is noted when she beat Miss D. Smith, 6-1, 6-2, but Miss Smith was not as overwhelmed as the score might indicate. Miss Smith prefers the ground-stroking game that Mrs Davy played and she traded drives with her long rallies without being able to win games. Mrs Davy was much surer in her placement and in her variations of length and direction and she should be in fine form by the time the tournament season begins. In a hurry to get to another appointment, Miss S. Field (Avonside) won her first set, 6-1, against Miss J. Hatch but she was caused some bothersome delay in the second set when she was taken to 7-9 by a determined Miss Hatch. In the other contest, Miss S. Rich, who will soon be lost to her team as she departs for a trip overseas, was in grand form to beat Mrs A. Ryan with the loss of only one game. Miss C. Andrew (United) hit hard and attacked the net when she’ beat Mrs Lovegrove, 11-9, 6-1. Results:— Shirley v. Avonside Singles.—Miss D. Smith lost to Mrs R. Davy, 1-6, 2-6; Miss J. Hatch lost to Miss S. Field, 1-6, 7-9; Mrs R. Keppel beat Miss L. Pledger, 7-5, 6-1; Miss M. Smith lost to Mrs P. Leopold, 2-6, 1-6. Doubles. —Misses D.
