EIGHT-OAR SQUAD

Abandonment Opposed "The Press’’ Special Service WELLINGTON, Nov. 6. Rowing in New Zealand would never progress jf the national eight-oar trainingsquad system was abandoned, said P. Delaney (Wellington), a member of the New Zealand eight at the Tokyo Olympic Games. In spite of its failure at Tokyo, the national squad had done a great deal to improve rowing standards in this country, he added. Delaney attributed failure at the Olympic Games to lack of overseas experience. Also, the crew was a little overwhelmed by the occasion. Those involved with the crew, however, realised now some improvements could be made in the training system, he said. He believed it would be better to select more experienced oarsmen for the squad and this would mean that they would not need to train together for as long. The vital need, however, was for more overseas experience—“what we lacked when we went to Tokyo.”
