Civil Defence Police
Two hundred and twenty-six applications to join the Civil Defence special police in the Christchurch police district have been accepted. Applicants sworn in now total 205. Further applications were still being considered and the initial target of 240 had been reached, said Inspector E. J. Trappitt yesterday. The ultimate target was 400. Mr Trappitt said that two women had made applica-
tions to join the special force. One of them had been accepted. The other woman lived in such a remote area that it would have been most difficult to fit her into the training schedules. Mr Trappitt said that applicants for the special police were still being sought because the aim was to have a force of 400.
The training of the special police detachments at Akaroa and Leeston in first-aid had now been completed. Constable J. B. Bromell, a divisional officer in the St. John Ambulance Brigade, had been in charge of the training.
