Rugby Captain Fined For Being In Bar
(New Zealand Press Association)
DUNEDIN, November 2. “I don’t want it to be thought I am giving undue treatment to the captain of the Otago Rugby team, but the circumstances are unusual,” Mr J. D. Willis, S.M., said today. He fined Christopher Robert Laidlaw, aged 20, a student,.. £3 for being a minor in a bar. Laidlaw pleaded guilty by letter. Senior-Sergeant R. M. Schwass said a police party visited the Criterion Hotel at 10.35 p.m. on September 12 where the Hawke’s Bay Rugby team was entertaining
the Otago Rugby team after a representative match. \
Laidlaw was questioned by a constable but did not frankly admit he was under age until he was questioned by the sergeant. Laidlaw was two months under age. Senior-Sergeant Schwass said Laidlaw told the sergeant he did not fully realise he should not be in the bar “even as a guest.” The Magistrate said he would impose a smaller fine than usual because Laidlaw was almost 21 and had been invited by the visiting team.
