Amberley Show Lambs Judged On The Hook
For the second year in succession, Mr J. R. Hislop, of Amberley, won the Amberley Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s competition for a pen of three lambs to weigh 361 b or under, dressed weight. By winning this class, Mr Hislop’s lambs gained him the Thomas Borthwick and Sons Challenge Cup. Mr Hislop also won second place in this year’s 361 b or under competition. Third place went to A, J. Blakely, of Amberley. The killing competition lambs were from the fat lamb classes at the Amberley show last Saturday. A total of 336 lambs came forward, compared with 376 last year. The competition was held at Thomas Borthwick and Sons Ltd.’s Belfast freezing works yesterday. Judges of the competition (Messrs A. E. White and E. Bell, supervising graders of the Meat Board and Mr A. G. Standbury, chief grader at the freezing works), said most of the carcases were too prime and three or four pens were overfat. These overfat carcases were not wanted either in New Zealand or overseas.
However, apart from the tendency to be too prime, the lambs were in satisfactory condition. Mr Hislop’s winning pen were sound all round and had good meat value right through the carcase. The second pen was almost as good while the third prize-winning lambs contained one lamb which was slightly too fat. In the unrestricted weight class, for lambs over 361 b, judges said the entries were quite good but were definitely over-prime. This section was won by G. H. Lang, of Glasnevin, with J. T. B. Wyllie, of Amberley second. In the Young Farmers’ Club and Country Girls’ Club section, J. McCaskey was first, A E. Whyte second and P. Stevenson, third. Details of results were:— Three lambs, to weigh 361 b or under, dressed.—J. R. Hislop, Amberley, Down cross (351 b 331 b, 331 b) 1, and (311 b 301 b, 311 b) 2: A. J.
