RUBBISH DISPOSAL DISCOURAGES FLIES

“Standard specification dustbins—galvanised, tapered, of two cubic feet capacity, and with a well-fitting lid, are now available in Christchurch. They bear the mark ‘SS’,” says the Christchurch city chief health inspector (Mr A. P. Millthorpe).

“The City Council collection service will dispose of up to two standard dustbins of rubbish every week without charge,” said Mr Millthorpe. “Quite generous free provision is also made for shops, hotels, and other trade premises.

“To prevent dustbins becoming an attraction to Aids, they should be put out regularly on collection days, and should have well-fitted lids to prevent flies getting in while the rubbish is awaiting collection. If there is any suspicion that a bin may have become foul, a few crumbled sheets of newspaper should be burned in it after the rub-

bish has been emptied. All food waste should be wrapped in newspaper before being put in the dustbin.

“Inquiries regarding the disposal of small additional amounts of rubbish should be made at the city engineer’s department; for larger loads, arrangements should generally be made with private contractors.

“But it is important,” Mr MiUthorpe said, “not only to buy a dustbin which is suitable but to keep it that way. Complaints are made from time to time about dustmen being careless with dustbins and knocking them out of shape, but the fault is often the householder’s for jamming material into the bin so that the dustman has to knock it against the side of the dustcart to get all the rubbish out. Many who put out one hard-packed dustbin for collection would be better advised to get an additional bin.”
